| Friday qualifying had the Corvettes P3 and P5. Later that day, after all post-qualifying tech inspections were completed, the #56 BMW failed tech due to ride height being too low. This pushed the Vettes up to P2 and P4.
Race day....where do we start...
Baltimore has been known for it's turn 1 pile-ups, but this time they didn't even make it to turn 1 before the carnage began. As the green flag flew, a massive pile-up started behind the leaders. The Corvettes luckily got through, but many were not so lucky. Thankfully everyone walked away unhurt.
Over an hour later all the cleanup was completed and the race would make a complete restart, with everyone in there original positions, minus the cars that were too damaged to return. Due to noise regulations, the race had to finish at 6pm, making this the shortest race in ALMS history at only 70 minutes long.
The second green flag would be a clean start and the field made it to turn 4 before a prototype made contact with the wall. The leading BMWs managed to make it by, but the two Corvettes were blocked in. A full course yellow came out shortly after.
Pit stops proceeded during the caution laps as the teams made driver changes. After some strong battles with the leading BMWs, the Corvettes managed to get by after traffic caused the BMWs the check up.
Jan Magnussen suffered some damage after crashing through the chicane tires, but proceeded to pass team mate Tommy Milner for the lead. Through all the craziness, Corvette Racing even saw themselves P1 & P2 OVERALL for a brief moment.
In the end, of what has to go down as the craziest races in ALMS history, Corvette Racing takes a 1-2 victory. It wasn't pretty, but a win is a win.
Someone should make some T-Shirts that say "I Survived Baltimore 2013"...
